I recently purchased a Nexiq adapter to use with my personal Dodge/Cummins trucks. The setup I’m working with:

1999 Dodge: Has the triangular 3-pin connector near the ECM.
2001 Dodge: Has the flat 3-pin connector, also near the ECM.

The Nexiq adapter I bought only includes the triangular 3-pin connector — not the flat 3-pin that my 2001 harness uses.

Issue

I tried connecting to the ECM on my 1999 Dodge using the triangular 3-pin connector, but it wouldn’t work. In fact, it triggered a Check Engine Light with a communication code error. I was able to clear that code using another tool I have.

I also tried plugging into the datalink port where my Quadzilla tuner is connected, still no luck.

I noticed that the 3-pin triangular connector on the truck only has two wires populated.

What Am I Doing Wrong?

Why can’t I communicate with the ECM? Is the missing wire the issue? Do I need a different adapter for full compatibility with these older Dodge trucks?
